First off I have to offer this disclaimer: I am one of James Lee Burke's biggest fans. He captured me initially with his "Dave Robicheaux" novels and has consistently delivered well thought out and intelligent stories for decades. Millions of people around the world have read his award winning novels, some of which have been interpreted on the 'big screen'. But in my opinion there is nothing much better than opening a James Lee Burke book while sitting in a comfortable chair in a quiet atmosphere free of distractions. You don't just read his novels, you drink it in like a fine wine.

Mr. Burke is master of clean and descriptive prose, painting virtually all of his characters with a rainbow of colors that range from the darkest black to the most explosive white. Each character is developed with his/her relevant backstory so that his/her part in the novel is clearly understood as far as experience and motivation. None of his characters are consistently 'good' or 'bad', instead their prior experiences combine with their current motivations to shape how they experience and approach a new situation. When combined with the inherent zaniness or craziness making up each individual character, the response to any situation can range from cool and calm to 'over the top'. The unpredictable way any situation is handled is bound to keep the reader surprised and on their toes. His heroes are Imperfect with a capital "I".

This particular story intrigued me because it was about a 17 year old boy who experiences the diverse micro environments provided by a big city in the very early 1950's. Not only did he have to deal with the regular changes that plague every teenage boy, but he was also exposed to organized crime, brutal violence, racial bigotry, homosexuality, addiction to alcohol and/or drugs, and the way that war veterans had their lives shaped by serving in overwhelming conflicts. Since I was born in 1950, I was essentially a generation away from this environment. However I could still relate to it through my parents' stories and habits and I recognized the music, automobiles, and war stories. I knew about hoods and greasers, bullies who were really cowards, and bad people who would do virtually anything to achieve their agendas. The environment in our country changed dramatically in the 1950's and James Lee Burke captures the times perfectly.

Yes, the story in this novel is well crafted and presented in James Le Burke's typical clear and concise manner. His descriptions are vivid, his narration accurately captures the times, and his characters mature by facing difficult and potentially damaging situations. Imperfect characters populate this novel with some slowly shifting from mostly bad to marginally good. Unlikely partnerships are made and complementary skills help mitigate bad situations. People mature, their perspectives change from the experiences they live through, and the stage is set for potential friendships. Add some wicked humor and you're facing a full course meal.

The Jealous Kind A Novel A Holland Family Novel edition by James Lee Burke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Another great piece of American literature from James Lee Burke, The Jealous Kind explores more than coming of age - it offers an examination of a young man realization that he is no longer a boy. It offers a heart felt reflection of his change in perspective from a person coming of age as the offspring of the Greatest Generation - but it exposes the harm of war, the changes in the way men think who have seen unspeakable horror, but retain a culture of honor. It contrasts the strength of these men and those who they have influenced vs. those who lack guidance and moral character.

Great read. One of his bests... it seems in the last two published novels that Burke has moved on from Dave Robicheaux and Clete and is baring his soul and perhaps some life experiences to contribute serious literature to the world.

I appreciate all your works, Mr. Burke - but this is clearly one of your best. Thank you.

Highly recommended for anyone who has parents that were WW2 veterans or grew up in the 1950's and 1960's. You will recognize these people and situations.

Enjoy!
I read some of the negative reviews of The Jealous Kind, and to those reviewers I say, even when James Lee Burke writes a book that is not his very best, it’s still better than 99% of fiction out there. Burke’s voice and style are unique and as powerful as ever in The Jealous Kind. The book was a sheer pleasure to read.

The challenges JLB faces is that he set the bar so incredibly with his body of work, that his “loyal” readers have become spoiled. But that’s no excuse for some of the nitpicky things pointed out by his negative reviewers.

I’ve read everything JLB has written, and I consider each of his books a treasure.
"Two stars?" you ask? JLB is one of my favorite authors. I'd like to flatter myself thinking he and I could have some great conversations. I respect this man's mind! So I have to be honest with my review.

As always, I savor end JLB's insights into human nature, his use of vocabulary, his grittiness when grittiness was the reality and tenderness and humanity likewise.

I didn't buy it that a 17 yr old kid and his collection of friends could do the things they did. There were gaps in "who and why?"

Aaron is the youngest protagonist JLB has ever built a story around. Aaron is too young for this story. It just does not equate. No matter how cool a Texas dude he is, it just doesn't work for me.
