It was years ago that I first saw Taste on my Goodreads feed. I immediately added it to my TBR pile. I mean, flesh eaters. Hellllllo awesome. Sadly, I kind of forgot about it until I saw it on sale on Amazon. And well, while I really liked it, I didn’t love it as much as I was hoping to.

First of all, I loved the world. Flesh eaters and these aren't typical “zombies.” It reminded me of the Vampire hierarchy we see a lot (except, they eat flesh and don’t drink blood) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Their history and background was quite fascinating.

The plot itself was very entertaining. There are two parts, one in which I will hide with spoilers. View Spoiler » Parts were very scientific and I loved it. We also have a villain that is trying to overthrow the King and take over the throne. Which, wraps up together with the “secret”.

Phoenix was an awesome main character. She is hilarious, witty, strong and spunky. She is overly curious and I loved her no nonsense attitude. I also loved how open she was to helping out Zhamvy. My only issue with her was her drastic change at the end. The woe is me persona doesn’t look good on her.

As far as the romance goes? Well. There is a hint at a love triangle but for me, it wasn’t one. Because Phoenix and Demitri had a “special bond”, there was no room for Luka. Which brings me to my issue with the romance. It’s hard to tell with these types of “bonds” if the characters genuinely love each other or not. Sure, they talk about it and everything, but I just didn’t FEEL it. I FELT Luka’s affection for Phoenix. So, no I didn’t ship it.

Demitri was a master at hiding his emotions. He is a great, er guy, but again, I didn’t really feel his love for Phoenix. Luka, though, I adored. He is funny, spunky and a lot like Phoenix. There is just a lot more to him than meets the eye. I adored all the secondary characters too. Dray, was a little bit hard to connect with because he seems too detached, emotionally. But I loved Preya, Phoenix’s room mate and “human” friend.

My Peeve – The romance. Everything else is golden.

Overall – I thoroughly enjoyed Taste. It’s original, unique and so fun. If you are looking for something different in paranormal, Taste is definitely IT. :)

Taste Kate Evangelista 9781937254551 Books Reviews

Okay, I'm gonna start off by saying just one word Amazing!

Kate Evangelista's debut novel Taste transported me to a world I never thought even existed! When we think of zombies, we think of nasty, brain-eating creepazoids that take more than a whole round of AK47 bullets to go down. But in this book, the world of the Zhamvy created by Evangelista was unique, interesting, and overall, very intriguing.

Breaking the Rule

Phoenix McKay, a stubborn pistol too curious for her own good, accidentally falls asleep while studying in the library. In her anxiety, she rushes to find a ride back to the dorms, knowing she's broken the one rule at Barinkoff no students are allowed on campus after dark. As she tries to find her ride, she experiences a run-in with the mysterious Night Students and is saved by Demetri, a cold, yet absolutely drop-dead sexy student dressed like the others.

Phoenix finds her curiousity reaching a new high as she presses Demetri for answers, but he cooly ignores her, getting her on probation for her continued attempts to sneak around campus to see him. What she didn't know while she was searching for the answers, was that she was propelling herself into a tense situation that even the bravest Zhamvy would shy away from.

Magnet for Disaster

Upon meeting Demetri, Dray, and the formidable Calixta, Phoenix still finds herself thirsting for answers, and in her obstinance, finally gets the strange "too-pretty-for-their-own-good" students to give her some answers. They are the Zhamvy, a race superior to humans that feasts on human flesh to survive, and as Phoenix delves deeper, she finds herself in the middle of a tough situation in Zhamvy City the race of Zhamvy is dying.

As luck would have it, Phoenix's stellar personality and history of pain and indifference leads her to agree to Dray's scientific experiments to help find a cure, and after her human physiology is altered to that of a Zhamvy, she gets herself into mountains of trouble.

Evangelista's characters all came to life right in front of me, and I read this book within two days (the only reason it took two was because I needed to get sleep...)! The chemistry between Demetri and Phoenix took my breath away, and her connection with Luka kept me thirsting for more.

I fell in love with Phoenix from the start, relating to most of her situations in a way that made her seem so real. The conversational tone of the novel made it genuinely interesting, giving me a glimpse at her thought processes and how she felt about both Demetri and Luka.

On to the HOTTIES!!!

Demetri stole my heart from when he was first introduced. Tall, blue-black hair, beautiful onyx eyes. Daaaaaaang that's one sexy zombie! <3 His behavior around Phoenix contained that air of nobility or a sense of duty, and the way he went out of his way to protect her all the time made my heart leap out of my chest.

Luka, on the other hand, was just as equally desirable. His sexy, bad-boy personality contrasted so starkly with Demetri's that it was almost comical at times. It was so hard to choose between these two flesh-eating hunks, but I feel like Demetri won my heart in the end out of his desire to make sure Phoenix was safe and happy! )

This book was absolutely phenomenal! I literally could not put it down! Kate Evangelista, wonderful job. I am quite impressed.
