What do you get for saving the world from an evil necromancer (Again)? Financial crisis and a religious fanatics! Congratulations! Our story picks up shortly after the conclusion of the last book, with Emily having to deal with short and long term fallout of her actions. On the long term side, it turns out that introducing ideas from an alien world/time period can have very unintended consequences. Case in point, new easy alphabet and printing leads to fall of established accountant guild, which results in the destruction of economic checks and balances. Ponzi would be proud! On the short term side, Emily's actions from the last story get interpreted by a medieval society in a medieval way.. shocking. Since her love interest's brother died heroically by her side with no witnesses, most of the "polite society" assume she helped him achieve martyrdom so that her lover could become heir to his house. Poor girl can't just get a break and that's only the introductory chapters.

Overall this is a great continuation of the series, the main character's development and adjustment to her new world and position remains on of the best parts. Bonus points for Stock market economy for dummies. While simplified for the sake of the overall plot, this aspect of the story nicely shows some pitfalls of modern economy and the origins of a financial crisis.

Fists of Justice Schooled in Magic Book 12 eBook Christopher Nuttall Reviews

The Schooled in Magic series is a solid fantasy series. Mr Nuttall has a fully developed world, has populated it with sympathetic characters and sets action packed plots to work in it.

This is all to the good, but there's more; while the first few volumes were fairly typical of a school story/coming of age story, the more recent volumes have moved beyond that. Rather like the way Sir Pterry used the Discworld to examine things we take for granted in this world, so too Mr Nuttall uses the Nameless world to look at lesser known bits of history. The previous volume (The Sergeant's Apprentice (Schooled in Magic Book 11) looked at military life in the era before mass national armies (roughly the 17th/early 18th centuries) and this one takes a look at the development of capitalism and the early industrial revolution at about the same time. In the process he shows us why the rule of law is important and why it has to be impartial. He also shows us just how disastrous an economic bubble can be as it sucks up savings and distorts the prices and availability of all sorts of vaguely related commodities.

You shouldn't read this book for its introduction to economics but it's a nice bonus to go with the usual excellent story telling.
This is a very good book indeed. However, although it follows nicely in the timeline of Emily’s adventures, it did feel a bit like a interlude, a little adventure story before Emily continues her education and moves on with the main story arc.

Nothing wrong with that but, personally, I do prefer the books where Emily is back at Whitehall getting on with her development. Also, a god chunk of this book is devoted to Ponzi schemes and the badness of these. As usual the angle is that Emily is, indirectly, responsible by introducing modern technology and ideas into the Nameless World.

Mr Nuttall does manage to evolve the story to one where magic plays the main role but I am afraid that, with a good chunk of the book a bit outside of my cup of tea, I’m not going to give a full set of stars on this one. There is nothing wrong with the book or the writing, which is excellent as usual, but it is just a personal preference of mine.

As I wrote the book starts of with Emily coming to Benefice and starting to learn that one of the largest businessmen in town is busy with a Ponzi scheme that, of course, is about to come crashing down. Some reviewers have claimed that the book is a bit preachy. I would not agree to that. It depicts a Ponzi scheme and its consequences fair and simple.

Around halfway into the book there is an interesting turn of events that moves it more into my own personal comfort zone. This is where magic and Emily’s real skills starts to become useful. From there on the book is as good as any of the books in this series which means it is pretty damned good.

After various adventures, betrayals and so on and so forth we, not surprisingly, arrive at the obligatory show down between Emily, her friends and the bad guy(s). Unfortunately things are complicated by the actions of her boyfriend. I have to say that I think he was a big arse both during and after the action. I am not really unhappy about how things turned out in the end.

So, the verdict is that this is a very good book. I would have rated it as great if not for some personal preferences of mine. As usual with this book series I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This one didn't grab me. Emily's continued meekness despite her accomplishments to date is starting to become somewhat irksome. She doesn't seem to be gaining any self confidence or spunk. The plot here gave some world building but it was mostly politics and religion. The magic system relied on old tropes and even ignored some of the coolest things (when are we going to see her proudly working in tandem with her snake while others look on aghast?!). That said, I have high hopes for the next one!
