The Oakdale Affair Edgar Rice Burroughs 9781517214807 Books

This book was only good because of the fact we get to see the weaknesses in ERB in his overall skills and particualrly in this his knowledge of the art of escape for any or all of his charachters that have ever been in a jam. Like the story starts off in the first chapter real good like and then ERB ruined it with adding on the billy byrnes bridge etc etc , like the whole other storyline characters just took over the book. This was just likewhat hapened when i was reading a Captain America and the falcon comic book and they came up on being ambushed by the Swine chachter and then all of a sudden the bad guy has been eaten up by a replaced nazi scientist monster charachter , and then we have to see the storyline from his point of view. So back to the mucker this was just not for him.. ok? this was a great set up from the first chapter.. the charachetr was a woman and mysterious , she was disguised and disgusied again and surrounded by the real thing for what she came across by accident.. maybe if she was an older female in a fantasy world and that being oldr under a disguise of being boyissh as the guys cant tel a girl from a boy when she arived as a burgler- she could be abit stronger against the bys and then run to maybe a makeshift set of chachters that are familiar like ok let it be the Byrne charachters that befriend her and rescue her can she rescue them back and not the needing part rescue i mean a rescue in the story like earlier? to show she can toughen up with predatory hoodlums? that remained to be seen so so far we have a bunch of villains well defined and they went nowhere. SUCKS! This does remind me of the Bowery boys and the other 1930's 1940's tv shows that i think this was where it was originally heading I think the reviews from the previous commentators did not thin of realize maybe ERB was on a deadline or he just wanted to get this out the way to hide writer's block . again this is a charachter of the Oakloosa Kid that never got explored we was jipped as readers=period! I am not the best reader either=ok? but if you want to read the classics and say you know what that writer made a mistake or did not give a s***! maybe a monkey was on his back which reminds me here we got some losers and no black kids to explore the racist or social angels of the time with black kids as mr tarzan has done in many other books... so the Nancy Drew character here . This is a book that deserved a treatment long ago by film producers that the movie would be based on the story by ERB and i bet the storyline needed to be
recompleted. Roger Cormen could have did this he probably would have aced a better story!

Edgar Rice Burroughs was a genius when it came to writing adventure! I have read, so far, about 40 of his books. Turns out he wrote about as prolifically as Steven King. Loved it!
Very interesting and extremely happy to find it for no cost at all! What a bargain! has great items. Look forward to having time to read it.
Whats to say part 3 of the trilogy not much of Billy Burnes in it just a mention to him but still classic ERB this was also purchased to fill out my collections. Fast and painless shipping a 1930s paperback in good condition. Thanks for the memories
One of Burroughs best novellas, including ending not in original hardcover edition!
I hate to rate a Burroughs book so low. I've been a fan of his works for a very long time. However, this version of the book is incomplete. The previous reviewer stated the book jumped right into the action with no back story. That is because this version is missing the first several pages. I happened to have two versions on my Droid app. and accidentally switched to this version after starting the other. The other version is the complete Mucker trillogy for $0.99. Well worth the price for three very good books.

If you want free, this version of the book will stand on it's own minus the back story, but if the back story is important to you, get the full version.
WHEN I WAS IN JR HIGH SCHOOL STARTED READING THE BURROUGHS BOOKS BUT SOME OF THEM WERE CENSORED BY THE SCHOOL LIBRARIES BECAUSE THEY WERE QUESTIONABLE MORALS. I PURCHASED MY OWN COPIES IN PAPERBACK TO READ AN UNCENCORED COPY. I THEN REREAD THEM WHEN I FINISHED MY LUNCH AND WAITED FOR MY NEXT CLASS TO START. LIKE THE TITLE AN OLD FRIEND. WHEN HOMELESS HAD TO SELL ALL THE BOOKS SO NOW I AM TRYING TO REBUILD MY LIBRARY AGAIN.
I am a long time Burroughs fan, mainly Tarzan and his Mars series, so when I saw this one available for free on the kindle I snapped it up as I had never heard of it before. Unbeknown to me, it is the 3rd book in the Mucker series. Well, I found that out when I was 80% through the book, and I suppose it might have made the main character, Bridge, a little more understandable. Truthfully, if I had known it was the 3rd book, I wouldn't have read it, but now that I finished it, it really didn't matter. The book starts off with a bang, but you don't have much background information, so you slowly figure out who the people are as you go along.

The book is the story of Bridge, a self proclaimed tramp/hobo, who comes across different people in one night and tries to help some and tries to protect others. It involves a haunted house, gypsies, bears and a variety of criminals and country folk. It is a crime story that gets solved in the last few pages. I think the storyline occurs over a span of 2 to 3 days. The style of writing gives the book an old feel to it, but I suppose it should. Not my favorite novel of ERB's, but it is a good story and goes quickly. Short and sweet.
