Deeds of Honor Paksenarrion World Chronicles eBook Elizabeth Moon

A journey to Paksworld is always a treat. These short stories cast a spotlight on characters and events not covered in the main stories and are well worth reading. I will return to these, as I do to everything Elizabeth Moon has written, knowing that there is more to them than a first reading will reveal. Some take one back to the days of legend and some take one forward to characters not yet born when the last book in the series ended.

Deeds of Honor Paksenarrion World Chronicles eBook Elizabeth Moon Reviews

These stories are not all equally polished or complete but like in the sketchbooks of a great artist they are works of art in themselves as well as artful suggestions of more to come. The most developed stories - "a parrion for cooking" and "the last lesson" are, like all of the Paksenarrion books, worth rereading and reflection on many levels - especially how character is discovered and developed in the face of challenges. Deeds of Honor is much more about honor than deeds, and we are all the richer for it.
Length is about 30 pages, not 140. The price is about what you would expect to pay for a full length paperback, roughly $1.00 - $2.00 over what the price should be.

Pretty nice short stories, they mostly range from 2 to 4 pages each. If you like short jaunts down memory lane, or a huge fan of Paks universe (I am). This is good to add to your collection.
I've been reading the Paksenarrion World books since Ms. Moon's first one, decades ago. I love them. These stories are best enjoyed if you understand the matrix in which they're embedded. But the stories themselves are strongly written and intrinsically rewarding.

I particularly liked the Last Lesson, which ends the book on a very strong note. I'm so glad to have this collection.
Background studies of a few of the characters in the Paksworld universe - interesting past and future history. I especially enjoyed the stories of Falk and Torre. If you haven't read the series through "Crown of Renewal", you may want to avoid the stories "A Parrion for Cooking" and "The Last Lesson."
If you have read the Paksennarion series, the (minor) characters in the back/future/sidestories in this book will be familiar to you, and it will be interesting to imagine with the author something about how the rest of their lives played out. These short stories would also enrich the reader's ability to immerse himself in the tale when he reads the series of novels for the first or second time.
In the world in which Moon sets the Paks series, there are humans, elves, gnomes, crossbred and related species, and even a dragon or two. There are earth-like animals and plants, the foods are mostly like ours, and the way people lived is what you would expect of a pre-industrial era--no electricity or machines. Instead there is magic, called "magery" in the books, local saints to whom knightly orders are dedicated, and high gods. The armies, which include female soldiers, are all mercenaries, and the land is divided into kingdoms, the forest taig, and the gnomish mountain folk. There is an important hierarchy of royalty and nobility, and the working class is governed by guilds and granges. Strong female characters throughout, as well as males. There is innate good with all its virtues, and there is total evil, bloodthirsty, brutal, and dark--almost too dark sometimes, which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5.
This book, the earlier books--The Deed of Paksenarrion, a 3-volume set telling the story of Paksenarrion, the sheep farmer's daughter who ran away to become a soldier in Fox Company, rather than marry the son of another farmer, and the 5-volume set, Paladin's legacy-- are best read in sequence. A blend of military scifi and fantasy, Moon's writing takes you into a different dimension of our own world.
These are 8 stories that all will stand alone as excellent examples of the Author, but do refer to characters in the Deed of Paksenarrion and The Paladin's Legacy.

Point of Honor This is the story of Arvid Semminson's transaction from a minor character introduced in Sheepfarmer's Daughter as an enforcer for the Thieves' Guild first met the not-yet-paladin Paksenarrion to the maturing character in the rescue of Paksenarrion in Oath of Gold to the Arvid of Crown of Renewal. But what happened in between - enjoy.

Falk's Oath Falk is another character like Gird and this is the bitter-sweet story of his and the honor of his oath, of who he was and what he became - enjoy.

Cross Purposes Paragon is territory that appears in all of the first Paksworld books as an antagonist - but not all the people are antagonistic. In this story we find a king attempting to extracate his kingdom from bad decisions and then making yet another but with an unexpected outcome - enjoy.

Torre's Ride This is the story of legend referenced in the Deed of Paksenarrion - enjoy.

Parrion of Cooking This is the story of Farin a cook which appeared in Oath of Fealty, the first volume of Paladin's Legacy. The question of how a cook could have survived in the circumstances of that house and not be corrupted is one I asked myself - enjoy.

Vardan's Tale This is the rest of the story of Vardan' bitter-sweet story that occurred between the end of the Kings of the North and the beginning of Echoes of Betrayal - enjoy.

Those Who Walk in Darkness This is a capivating story of a minor character, Selis who appears in both the Deed of Paksenarrion and Paladin's legacy. It is a story of the begining of courage and honor - enjoy.

The Last Lesson This story takes place after the Paladin's Legacy and is one of the most insightful stories I have read on the attempt to help students learn who they are I hope you enjoy.

PS. Elizabeth Moon belongs to those authors I most admire, for all her character driven stories are interesting and provide insight to character. Honor to you Elizabeth.
A journey to Paksworld is always a treat. These short stories cast a spotlight on characters and events not covered in the main stories and are well worth reading. I will return to these, as I do to everything Elizabeth Moon has written, knowing that there is more to them than a first reading will reveal.
